The 3 Main Taekwondo Moves You Should Know

The term Taekwondo is derived from the Korean word Tae meaning foot, Kwon meaning fist and Do meaning way of. So, literally Taekwondo means the way of the foot and fist.The name has only been used since 1995 even though the arts roots started 2,300 Years ago in Korea.

Recognised as a martial art, method of self-defence, and way of life, the evolution of Taekwondo was a direct result of the happenings in Korea long ago, and knowledge of the history is an important step in understanding taekwondo.

Pattern 1: Chon-ji

First, we take a look at the 10 movements in this ITF pattern. Some articles however state that there are more than 10 movements. In order to perform chon-ji exactly, you will have to work on your taekwondo stance.

  1. Start in the Joon-bi or prepared stand
  2. Turn left 90 degrees, change left leg and go into a walking posture left leg forward,

Low block with left arm

  1. Move forward into walking stand with right leg forward, right middle punch
  2. Turn 180 degrees right, walking stand with right leg forward, low block with right arm
  3. Move forward into walking stand with left leg forward, left middle punch
  4. Turn left 90 degrees, front stand with left leg forward, low block with left arm
  5. Move forward into walking stand with right leg forward, right middle punch
  6. Turn right 180 degrees, walking stand with right leg forward, low block with right arm

Pattern 2: Dan-Gun

Next, we take a look at the 5 basic movements in this ITF pattern. In order to perform this pattern perfectly, you will need to work on your taekwondo stance.

  1. Start in the Joon-bi or Prepared stand
  2. Turn left 90 degrees and go into an L-stand left leg forward, middle knife hand guarding block
  3. Move forward into a walking stand with right leg forward, right high punch
  4. Turn right 180 degrees and go into an L-stand right leg forward, middle knife hand guarding block
  5. Move forward into a walking stand with left leg forward, left high punch

Pattern 3: Do San

Lastly, we discuss the 5 basic movements in this ITF pattern. You need to perfect your taekwondo stance in order to perform this pattern perfectly.

  1. Turn left 90 degrees, move the left foot forward. Forming a left walking stand while executing a high side block with the left outer forearm.
  2. Middle punch to your foot with the right fist while maintaining a left walking stand toward your foot.
  3. Move the left foot, and then turn clockwise to form a right walking stand while executing a high side block to a with the right outer forearm.
  4. Middle punch with the left fist while maintaining a right walking stand.
  5. Move the left foot to form a right L-stand while executing a middle guarding a right walking stand toward fingertip.

If you practice these three main patterns, you can certainly excel in taekwondo and reap the rewards. Remember that practice makes perfect!

10 Basic Moves for Taekwondo Beginners
